Only one thing is certain. War is coming and she will decide who wins and who loses…But, which side will she be on?

“I can’t do it again. I can’t watch you walk away. I’m not strong enough. So when you tell me you’re not going back I need you to mean it because I won’t let go again.”

“Hello my child,” she said, stepping towards me. The voice was familiar, like something from a dream and it was distinctly different from the Loa’s. “You’ve grown up and become everything we ever hoped you would.”

“Be careful and remember, whatever you do, don’t be fooled by a pretty face and a few charming words. They all have that quick wit that will have you upside down and backwards before you can utter an objection.” She moved in and pressed a tender kiss to my temple and squeezed my arms much like a grandmother would. “Find Yansa. She’ll have the answers you seek,” the woman whispered into my ear low enough that only I could hear before pulling away.

“Well, as always, it’s been such a pleasure, Marie.” Samedi’s sarcasm wasn’t lost on either of us.

Erzulie-Marie stepped back to her starting location in front of the altar. “I’m sorry for all you’ve had to endure and for all of the suffering yet to come. I hope one day you will understand and grant me forgiveness, ma belle.” Her head fell back and Erzulie twitched a few times before the glowing raven exploded forth from her chest and disappeared into thin air.

The Sweetest Burn - Tour

The Sweetest Burn
by Jeaniene Frost

The breathtaking second novel in New York Times bestselling author Jeaniene Frost’s Broken Destiny series finds Ivy and Adrian rekindling their alliance—and passion—as the struggle for the fate of the world begins…
Conquering a supernatural realm turned out to be easier than getting over a broken heart. But her initial victory has made Ivy a target for revenge, forcing her to reunite with the dangerous—and dangerously sexy—Adrian. Ivy isn’t sure which will be harder: finding the hallowed weapon that will repair the crumbling walls between the demon and human realms, or resisting Adrian, who’s decided that come hell or high water, he will make Ivy his.
At first, Adrian tried to resist his feelings for Ivy. Now, determined to break the curse that dooms their love, he’s vowed to save her and to have her. If only he can persuade her to forgive his past sins. But defying destiny—and surrendering to the smoldering desire between them—will bring consequences and sacrifices they never imagined…
“Frost scores another win with the mesmerizing second Broken Destiny supernatural contemporary… The novel thrums with energy, its pacing breakneck from the very start, and piles on the sexual tension. Frost provides a much-needed inventive boost to the tired angel/demon subset of supernatural fantasy.” –Publishers Weekly

My Review: Taking care of business in another realm? Sure, no issues there. Dealing with a broken heart? Yeah, that's a whole other story there. It's not easy to get over it, but right now Ivy has a target on her back.

To take on this new task she will have to work with Adrian again. Ivy would rather do this with anyone else right now. Last thing she wants is to work on her feelings with Adrian while worrying about how to repair a wall.

This whole destiny thing isn't just for show. It's going to bring challenges, it's not always going to be easy, but if they fight hard enough things may just work out.

Overall it's a short fast read. Fast paced and on the edge of your seat reading. It's going to keep you captivated until the last page. By then you'll be finding a way to get the next book in your hands like yesterday.

The Winners Kiss

The Winners Kiss

Book: The Winners Trilogy #3
PublisherFarrar, Straus and Giroux
Pub Date: March 29, 2016
Genre: Young Adult
Format: Print

Book Links: Goodreads  Amazon  Book Depository

Some kisses come at a price.

War has begun. Arin is in the thick of it with untrustworthy new allies and the empire as his enemy. Though he has convinced himself that he no longer loves Kestrel, Arin hasn’t forgotten her, or how she became exactly the kind of person he has always despised. She cared more for the empire than she did for the lives of innocent people—and certainly more than she did for him.

At least, that’s what he thinks.

In the frozen north, Kestrel is a prisoner in a brutal work camp. As she searches desperately for a way to escape, she wishes Arin could know what she sacrificed for him. She wishes she could make the empire pay for what they’ve done to her.

But no one gets what they want just by wishing.

As the war intensifies, both Kestrel and Arin discover that the world is changing. The East is pitted against the West, and they are caught in between. With so much to lose, can anybody really win?

My Review: Kestrel is taken to a camp to work. Is she still a princess? Well technically not while she's at the camp. She pretty much got screwed over once her dad read a letter meant for another. That letter lost her everything. The kingdom, fiance, wedding, and now she has nothing.

Meanwhile Arin is seeing Kestrel in a way that he can't stand her. But if he only got that letter things could be seen differently. She isn't as bad as he thinks.

While at the camp Kestrel is put to work. Given food and drink laced with something that gives her enough power to work like it's no one's business.

As you read along, things seem tough and who know where things will go. But then you are hit with a surprise that changes everything. You will be hooked and then saddened at the end of the series. It was a rocky start for me, but the series ended is a way that made me enjoy the series.

Genre: Young Adult
Format: Print

In Croswald, the only thing more powerful than dark magic is one secret…

For sixteen years Ivy Lovely has been hidden behind an enchanted boundary that separates the mundane from the magical. When Ivy crosses the border, her powers awaken. Curiosity leads her crashing through a series of adventures at the Halls of Ivy, a school where students learn to master their magical blood and the power of Croswald’s mysterious gems. When Ivy’s magic––and her life––is threatened by the Dark Queen, she scrambles to unearth her history and save Croswald before the truth is swept away forever.

My Review: Not only did I get this lovely ARC to read, but I got some cool swag too. D.E. Night is a great author to work with as well as a great writer.

Anywho...

Ivy has always lived her life behind this magical barrier. She never expected what could happen if she crossed the border.  So when her powers awaken, Ivy will learn things aren't going to be easy. Nope, time to go through the Halls, learn about gems, and mastering her magical blood, oh an all while being threatened.  Well that's certainly a change from being in a kitchen right?

But somehow through all the surprises Ivy keeps finding herself in trouble. She shouldn't be breaking rules or doing things outside of the training she's had. But oh well! Ivy is strong and she can get through all the crazy. Oh and the ending was a huge shocker. Yup you will need your hands on the next book like yesterday. It's just that good.

Oh yeah, if you loved Harry Potter like I do, then you shall have to give this a try at least based on that.

Paintbrush

Paintbrush
Hannah Bucchin

Published by: Blaze Publishing
Publication date: July 11th 2017
Genres: Romance, Young Adult
Mitchell Morrison and Josie Sedgwick have spent their whole lives at the Indian Paintbrush Community Village, a commune full of colorful characters tucked in the mountains of North Carolina, and they aren’t particularly close–at least, not anymore. Josie wishes she could spend all of her time at Paintbrush planting tomatoes, hiking the trails, or throwing giant communal birthday parties, while Mitchell can’t wait to escape the bizarre spiritual sharing and noisy community dinners. Luckily for both of them, high school graduation is just around the corner.
But when Mitchell’s mother makes a scandalous announcement that rocks the close-knit Paintbrush community, and Josie’s younger sister starts to make some dangerously bad decisions, the two find themselves leaning on each other for support – and looking at each other in a whole new light. Their childhood friendship blossoms in to something more as they deal with their insane families, but as graduation approaches, so does life in the real world, forcing Josie and Mitchell to figure out what, exactly, their relationship is – and if it can survive their very different plans for the future.
SNEAK PEEKS:
Mitchell

“Hi.” I tighten my grip on her waist, and she moves her hand from my shoulder, sliding her fingertips slowly, until they rest on the back of my neck. I close my eyes.

When I open them again, she’s staring at me, her face so close I can see the flecks of brown in her green eyes. It would be so easy to kiss her. Just a few inches. It would be the easiest thing in the world.
Josie

“We’re a mess, aren’t we?” He grins at me.

I can’t help it—I lean into him, pressing my shoulder into his, wanting to feel his warmth and his soft sweatshirt, wanting to be a part of that smile.

I shrug. “All the best people are messy.”

Author Bio:
Hannah has spent her life falling in love with beautiful places, both real and fictional. She grew up in charming Bethlehem, PA, went to college in sunny Chapel Hill, NC, spent a summer studying wildlife in Tanzania, volunteered on organic farms across New Zealand, and hiked all over Acadia National Park in Maine. When not writing, reading, or adventuring, she likes to daydream about the dog she'll adopt someday, listen to music from the sixties, and exchange ridiculous texts with her parents and siblings. Paintbrush is her first novel.

Royally Romanov

Royally Romanov
by Teri Wilson

Book: The Royals #2
Publisher: Pocket Star
Pub Date: July 17, 2017
Genre: Adult
Format: ARC
Source: Publisher
Book LinksGoodreads  Amazon

In this charming modern day retelling of the 1956 classic Anastasia, a museum curator falls for a mysterious man who may or may not be a long lost heir to Russia’s imperial Romanov dynasty.

Finley Abbot is organizing the most prestigious art exhibit of her career at the Louvre museum—a retrospective of art from the House of Romanov. But the sudden appearance of Maxim Romanov threatens to turn her into the biggest laughingstock of the art world. When she finds herself falling in love, she realizes there’s even more at stake than her career. How can she trust a man with her whole world when he can’t remember a thing about his past?

After suffering a violent blow to the head, Maxim’s only clue to his identity is a notebook containing carefully researched documentation in his own handwriting indicating that he is the sole surviving descendant of the Grand Duchess Anastasia, previously thought dead in the murder of her family during Russia’s Bolshevik revolution. His struggle to put the mysterious pieces of his past back together leads him to Finley. At first, she’s convinced Maxim is nothing but a con artist. But there’s something undeniably captivating about the beautiful, brooding man who claims to be searching for his identity—something Finley can’t quite bring herself to resist. When he reveals a secret about one of the imperial Fabergé eggs in the collection, she accepts he may actually be telling the truth. But as soon as Finley and Maxim act on their feelings for one another, Maxim is confronted with evidence that calls into question everything he’s begun to believe about himself.

My Review: I love this take on Anastasia. It was done better than a few Ive read.

Anywho...Finley is smart and loves art. Right now she is working on organizing a huge exhibit, so huge it will mean big things for her career.

What she didnt expect from this was falling for the guy of which the art is from. But how can you fall for a guy who doesnt know the past?

Its not Maxim's fault he cant remeber. He was struck pretty hard and, that left his memory blank. But he does know he is related to Anastasia. So thats something to go off right?

Together they work to figure it all out. Hopefully the pieces will fall into place and all goes well right? If only things could ever be that simple.

Just as things are building up things hit a wall. It only one piece of evidence to question everything. What will Maxim do and what does it mean for him and Finley?

Let me tell you the build up to it was amazing. You get smacked at every perfect moment which will only make you want to read the book in one sitting and calmy wait to reas the next book in the series.

YA book proposal contest

Putting the Readers Back in Charge of Publishing

Imagine a YA publishing process without gatekeepers.  One where editors and agents read the manuscripts that readers love, not vice versa.  One where anyone with a knack for writing, a passion to succeed, and a little flair for self-promotion, has a fair shot at being published.

All too frequently, this isn’t the case.  Books often get rejected for reasons beyond authors’ control.  One editor turned down an ultimately successful book by saying, “The girl doesn't, it seems to me, have a special perception or feeling which would lift that book above the 'curiosity' level.”  The book in question?  The Diary of Anne Frank.  Furthermore, according to the Cooperative Children’s Book Center, only about 10% of all YA books accepted for publication feature “multi-cultural content.”  Clearly, there are some blind spots that need addressing in the publishing industry.

It’s with this vision in mind that Publishizer is launching its YA book proposal contest called Plot Without a Cause.  Publishizer is a startup seeking to fill a hole in the publishing industry through crowdfunding.  It works like this:

You write the book proposal.  You know the book proposal I’m talking about.  The one you’ve been daydreaming about for years.  The one that just popped into your head last week and you haven’t stopped thinking about since.  The one for the manuscript that’s been dearly loved by you but maybe not so much yet by the publishing industry.  That one.  Then you register (for free!) on Publishizer’s website and post your proposal in the Plot Without a Cause section (again—for free!).

Now this is when you’ll have to start hustling.  Crowdfunding runs on pre-orders, so you had better start promoting that proposal.  Reach out over social media, post on your blog, email your old roommates—whatever it takes to start building buzz.  If you get the most preorders by the time the contest ends, you’ll win $1000 dollars.  And if you don’t have the highest number of preorders, don’t worry—you’ll still be queried to major publishers who fit your proposal.

Previous Publishizer contest participants have gotten interest and landed deals with a variety of traditional publishing companies, including Harvard Square Books, She Writes Press, and Weiser.  Publishizer takes a small commission on pre-orders when you choose a publisher at the end.

Every year, thousands of books are rejected by the publishing world for reasons that have nothing to do with the quality of the book—they’re too mainstream or not mainstream enough, too similar to books already being published or too different from books already being published.  Or the literary agent just doesn’t stand to make much money on the deal so they pass on a perfectly good book!  Imagine how many brilliant YA manuscripts go unpublished every year thanks to frustrating rejections.  Imagine how many hugely talented authors quietly give up on their dreams, just because the gate to a traditional publishing path isn’t open to them.

With their new YA book proposal contest, Plot Without a Cause, Publishizer is seeking to level the playing field.  Publishing decisions shouldn’t be based solely on a literary agent’s judgement or how many friends you have in the industry. They should be based on quality of writing and how many readers the book attracts.

Great books get overlooked all the time, and this is an opportunity to show acquiring editors that yours is worth paying attention to.  Not to mention the readership and funds you could gain in the process.  Crowdfunding (or crowd-publishing, in this case) is growing in popularity and brings a personal touch back to book sales—for readers and publishers.  Are you in?
